Why Do Jackets Have Lapels?

Thanks to Peter Provins on LinkedIn for sending in this question!

The truth is, lapels on jackets are mainly aesthetic. They don't really serve a functional purpose.

In terms of aesthetics and the style that you might consider for yousefl, there are 3 main styles - the peak, the notch and the shawl.

The peak lapel is often found on a double-breasted jacket but we also do put it on a single breasted.

I love the peak lapel. It gives a really powerful look. It draws the eye line out to the edges of the shoulders and that also creates the effect of making your waist look narrower - so it makes you look slimmer!

Then you have the notch lapel. That's the most classic, it's the most subtle, I guess the most conservative you could say.

And then the shawl lapel is the rounded type that you often see on tuxedos. In recent years, most famously on the tux worn by Daniel Craig in Skyfall.

Hope that helped and if you've got any clothing or style-related questions, please drop them in the comments below!
